The Blogging Trifecta: Diligence, Dependability, and Destiny

The blogosphere is full of useful resources offering valuable information. Unfortunately, the sheer size of the blogosphere can make it difficult to be seen by a big audience due to the countless number of articles from which any potential visitor can choose to read.
The difficulties experienced in getting started have deterred numerous bloggers, and they will continue to deter many more in the future. For each blogger that gives up, you have ever more opportunity to become successful in your efforts.
With that said, there are some key points you should remember as you continue to blog. I present to you The Blogging Trifecta.
1. Diligence. If you want to be respected as a blogger and be considered a good source of information, you need to stick with it. If you’re ultimately looking to make money from your blog, it’s not going to happen overnight. Although every blog won’t experience the same growth over time, it’s important to recognize the effort that is required as long as you continue to blog.
Bloggers like Darren Rowse and John Chow who are making a substantial amount through their blogs all had to start somewhere, after all. Looking at my blog earnings for example, you can see that I’m nowhere near the income level I would need to survive from blogging. However, my earnings have grown over time, and they will continue to grow as long as I keep at it.
Many bloggers have recognized the importance regarding the amount of time put into blogging required for long term success, and you should too. Several key reasons include: the necessity of having a plentiful quantity of content available to your potential readers; allowing inbound links to grow and search engines to rank you high for key search terms; and the ability to network and personally grow as a blogger.
2. Dependability. Readers return to blogs and subscribe to RSS feeds because they know that blogs tend to be updated on a frequent basis. Offering at least some consistency in your posting pattern is typically expected of a blog, and it will keep your readers interested in returning to find out what you’ve most recently written about.
It can help to set a schedule for blogging. Planning to publish posts on specific days throughout each week is a common practice. For those weeks when your life leaves you too busy to blog on those days, it may be necessary to plan early by writing posts ahead of time and scheduling them to post automatically at a certain date or time.
Sometimes there are other things you need to work on within your blog beyong just writing new posts. You may need to install a plug-in, update your layout, or contact other bloggers about relevant topics like guest blogging. Instead of simply following a routine for updating your blog, you may prefer utilizing a point system as explained by one of Darren’s readers on ProBlogger.
3. Destiny. Okay, I use the term “destiny” loosely; I’m not talking about predetermination here. What I really mean by destiny is having a little luck at the right time or place. Any blogger just getting started needs a little bit of luck somewhere along the way before they will be able to really hit it big.
I follow a good number of blogs in my feed reader, but most of these blogs are the ones everyone already knows about. There are a few blogs — new and mature alike — that fall within the same niche as my blog, but their RSS subscriber counts never seems to go much of anywhere. Similarly, I had the problem of a low RSS count that continued to rise slowly but steadily until I recently had somewhat of a big break. I wouldn’t have had the traffic needed for such a boost without having a little luck on my shoulder.
Despite luck factoring into it, don’t just let luck run its course. E-mail the big guys when you write your better articles to let them know about it. Betshopboy is one blogger I know who does this well, and he recently found his blog linked to on ProBlogger. By keeping your blogger role models in the loop, they just might decide to link to you, offering a traffic boost like you’ve never experienced before!

Hey Matt
Thanks for the shout out, I never expected my 2 cents worth comment to be cited and linked back by ProBlogger. It was a pleasant surprise.
You flattered me with your kind words, it was luck playing a big part.
