Having a large header is more a visual impression than anything else. This way the reader will immediately think of what the website looks like when the reader thinks of visiting the website before typing the address.

I have found quite a few websites with small headers which are easily forgettable including my own. It is a free theme and haven't been able to successfully enlarge the header nor the title yet. However I do like the idea of a reader landing on my home page and taking some time to scroll down to read the content than take a look at the first title of the post and bounce away.

You have a good sized header yourself, just need more of the sky to aim high.

As a reader, I think it's quite OTT. But if it's making John more money, without affecting his traffic, he'll keep it, and I guess the designer did his job well. :)
