I’ve noticed a great amount of controversy over preference of blog design ever since John Chow’s recent makeover, mainly with regards to the header size pushing the content further down. However, not all readers have the same screen resolution. Do you find that the larger header hinders your ability to immediately access the content? Would you prefer a larger or smaller header if you were in John Chow’s shoes?

As a reader, I think it’s quite OTT. But if it’s making John more money, without affecting his traffic, he’ll keep it, and I guess the designer did his job well.

Having a large header is more a visual impression than anything else. This way the reader will immediately think of what the website looks like when the reader thinks of visiting the website before typing the address.
I have found quite a few websites with small headers which are easily forgettable including my own. It is a free theme and haven’t been able to successfully enlarge the header nor the title yet. However I do like the idea of a reader landing on my home page and taking some time to scroll down to read the content than take a look at the first title of the post and bounce away.
You have a good sized header yourself, just need more of the sky to aim high.
