Question of the Week - Week of 7/23/2007

Since looking into making positive changes to an about page and partaking in a much appreciated interview with Christine of The Sapheyerblu Review, I’ve been thinking more and more about personal branding. In what ways have you tried to brand yourself? What do you think you could do to further promote yourself or your business?

Neils blog, quicksprout, is great for personal branding. I think it is very relevant in business today, which is why I developed a blog, tv show, awards and now magazine around the topic.

#2 tactic - my 2 -3 new personal brand marketing tips every week, for lawyers, accountants, financial planners, real estate, and health experts

#3 tactic - my audio-books - I now get paid to market my personal brand!

I’ve done no personal branding except that my site’s name is my name. So does that count?

  5. Vikram Rajan Says:

    yes :)

Starting my blog and writing constantly and authentically has been my attempt at it.

My blog is a career blog, and I recently posted on the need for going above and beyond the resume into the realm of intentional personal branding.

It’s called Your Resume Is Just Like a Used CD and the upshot of it is a call for creative differentiation.

In fact, a couple of the commentors above also chimed in over there.

Enjoying the site, keep up the good work!

I never really thought of it as personal branding, but for me, it’s just a statement of who I am.

When you live in the middle of cow country, you really don’t want to think about getting branded.

    Touché.

They still do that sh*t, eh?

I’m one of those vegetarian nuts that wants to save every animal possible. And I think it’s rather ironic that I my practice revolves around “personal branding.”

And to your point, ‘personal branding’ is a very nouveau buzz-phrase for “reputation management” or even “public relations” in its most fundamental and broadest definitions.

Personally, a personal brand does not connote leverage, but rather total co-dependence upon a “living persona.” Its actually a very vulnerable position for a professional.

Rather, I prefer to market my personal brand and then leverage it. There are 3 ways to do so - we know many of them from common celebrity of experts. And it leads to multiple streams of on-going income.

That’s the fun part of what I help experts do :)

Matt, great site! I just starting blogging and am working on my personal brand. I think it entails everything on ones site, from the layout to the about page to the actual content. I have visited many blogs this past week and the ones that have stuck out the most are those that have their own creative touch or brand. From a beginners perspective I see branding as a process, not a single event.

    Hi Matt,

I have to agree with Mark Clark. As a new blogger, I continue to evolve with each post. Because of that evolution, I’ve changed my theme several tomes.
Currently my theme reflects “me”. (In time, that may change)

When I first started blogging, my “About” page, was pretty vague. Since then, I have found the desire to “tell the world”, who I am, where I came from, and what I hope to accomplish by blogging. I think the more you tell your readers about yourself, the more powerful your “brand” (credibility) becomes.

As a non-traditional age blogger, I feel I can give my readers a different “spin” on the topics I write about. With regard to blogging, I’m writing more of a “through the eyes of a child” perspective, as I’m definitely a “low tech” person, on the road to discovery.

Visiting your blog, Matt, is always an educational experience for me. Keep up the great work.
