One Penny Project Blog Review

The One Penny Project is definitely one of the more creative blogs I’ve come across online. As someone who is interested in business, my interest was easily piqued due to the unique nature of this blog as implicated by the blog’s name.
In searching through the archives, I found the full details regarding the goals of the One Penny Project. Michael, the author, states the following:
The idea is to find 1 penny (in a public place) or have someone give you 1 penny for no reason. If the first thing you find is more then 1 penny, then you cannot pick it up. When you find your first penny, keep it separate from your other money. Finding your first penny is step 1. Step 2 is turning that 1 penny into 2 cents. … If you find say $10, then you can skip all the way to step 12.
Although Michael does not explicitly state that he has a specific monetary goal, he explains the difficulty in reaching $1 million since this amount of money can’t be found on the ground like loose change can be, as per his quotation above. Perhaps Michael is leaving the goal open ended so that he might aim even higher if and when he finds success in reaching the $1 million mark.
Regardless of Michael’s goal, the ways he has doubled his initial penny thus far is intriguing. From CPC advertising to essentially selling pieces of paper, Michael has reached a current cash balance of $13.80 since October 2006. This is impressive considering he started with a single penny and even experienced monetary loss along the way.
One of the more thought provoking posts on Michael’s blog relates to the ways people spend money to make money. When considering purchasing a book that he thought would assist in his efforts to double his current monetary status, he suddenly realized that this purchase was greater than his current cash balance. Making this purchase would violate his own terms that he set forth for his project. I appreciate that he is strictly adhering to his own rules to show that this can be done even though he makes it clear that he could otherwise afford the book.
The One Penny Project is definitely going to be one of the blogs I follow closely, and I encourage you to do the same. Let the author know what you think so far. Maybe you’ll even have some profitable ideas you can share that have worked for you in the past!
